Vocal Health, Habilitation for Vocal Injuries

Your voice

Our voice works hard for us and we often take our vocal health for granted. We open our mouth and it works for us... well, at least until it just doesn't...

If you have an injury or vocal issues it can be quite scary and certainly can cause great anxiety to the singer and professional voice user ...  I am here to help!

I have a graduate certificate in vocology from Lamar University so I am a vocologist/singing voice specialist. In addition to my vocology graduate work, I have spent years working on different pedogeological techniques in both classical and contemporary singing.  I have had clinical observations of vocal injuries with both Laryngologists and SLPs. I also uniquely understand the faulty posturing and tensions that the body can hold. These often contribute to vocal issues, especially after an injury.

What exactly is vocology?

According to experts in the field (Verdolini-Abbott and Titze), vocology's primary goals are:

  1. To help the client find the most ideal voice that works for them
  2. To have the client feel good about the sounds they are making
  3. To help them achieve the greatest control of their voice possible
  4. To have vocal longevity
  5. To be able to assess is there are vocal issues and have the correct tools to fix them

Vocology is the science and practice of voice habilitation which helps to repair, restore and bring a voice back to a state of normality after injury. The field includes understanding in anatomy, vocal pedagogy, practice and performance skills, motor learning and perceptions, understanding of acoustics, auditory perception and hearing. Vocologists understand the voice through singing and speaking and can detect and help restore the voice through various methods.
